Knowing how to spell the chords you play is as vital as any other topic in music. Observe whether the chord has a major or minor 3rd, check out for the 11th and 13th etc. If it's more than two octaves, your 2nd becomes your 9th, 4th becomes 11th and 6th becomes 13th. If you know how to spell out your chords it will be easy to explain the chordal concept to anyone who asks you.
